we begin with a deadly bus crash that leaves one man dead. it was a scene that killed a bus driver and left several children and adults injured. it fell 45 feet from a sky ramp onto i-270 in bethesda. we have live team coverage with a john gonzalez and kris van cleave. brad? >> well, it has become a federal investigation. the team met from the national transportation safety board arrived. they will look at the condition of the bus, the condition of the roadway, and the drivers medical history. the driver has been identified as a 66 year-old joseph a. clabaugh from hanovrer, pennsylvania. he was pronounced dead at the

scene. he is the only fatality. when you see the video, you'll find that fact amazing. in the moments after the crash, rescue crews scrambled to tend to the wounded, most of whom were children. for those who rushed to help, that made it were. >> everybody was saying, get the kids up. i helped the first girl -- i held her. they were crying and bleeding. >> there were couple in shock. it was pretty bad. >> pamela was among the first to arrive on scene. she had been driving north when the bus nearly rolled into her path. >> i saw a big white man's come down over the overpass. it careened over. >> what the passengers told her is that they were from carlisle, pennsylvania, and had been on a trip to washington to the zoo

and to the smithsonian. seconds before the 29 passenger bus crashed, the driver appeared to have slumped over in his seat. officially, state police say it is too early to know what caused the wreck. >> what we know is what you already know and have seen, that the bus came off the roadway just prior to entering the sky ramp, came down through trees and brush on an embankment about 45 feet, came to rest on top of the jersey wall on northbound i-270. >> the maryland state police it is the lead agency and they will continue their investigation. it will be weeks before they come up with a cause for this collision. one of the first things they want to see is the autopsy report from that driver. the ntsb says their report will take many months to complete.

morew, we're also learning details about the company that operates the bus involved in the crash. the motor safety carrier association says that the bus received a satisfactory rating last month. the company has not responded for comment on the appearat. minutes ago, some of the victims were released from area hospitals and family members are speaking out. >> eight people were taken to suburban hospital in bethesda. three others were taken to shady grove adventist in rockville, and one other victim was taken to shady grove emergency center in germantown. kris van cleave has a late reaction from one relieved family. braque's very relieved scared that is true. this is montgomery county's trauma center.

in the worst of the injuries were brought here. so were a lot of kids. video of the kids sent family members are rushing into suburban hospital to check on their loved ones. eight of the 12 injured came here. >> we are glad they are all sacred >> late tonight, signs of relief. the youngest of the survivors hugging family and nurses before going home. we watched as four children left the hospital. these three kids are siblings, a nine year-old girl and two boys. >> thank go.d d. it could have been all whole lot worse. >> definitely relieved. they are sacred >> and the kids were of school today and had gone to the nationals here with at least one adult. the mother of the six year-old girl was taken to suburban hospital. >> haven't had the chance to talk to them? >> the kids did not remember a

lot. >> the hospital also treated to a trauma patients, an elderly man and woman. they are no in fair condition. everyone else is good or has gone home altogether -- they are now in fair condition. >> of the fall seemed pretty significant. the mechanism, the physics, i am surprised there were not more severe injury. >> at last report, the four other patients taken to other hospitals were transported with non life-threatening injuries. they are expected to be ok and many of them could have been released at this hour. we are waiting for an update from the other hospitals. >> also, we are hearing from a pair of heroes -- to people who jumped into action minutes before the accident. -- two people who jumped into action minutes before the accident. we are live in bethesda to continue our team coverage.

>> the good samaritan we spoke with tonight did not think twice this afternoon. he witnessed the accident and rushed into the bus, where he saved four children. in the meantime, when heavy rain was falling during rush hour traffic, in an area that is already busy, this serious crasn montgomery county. jorge was in rush hour traffic 5 feet behind the bus when it crashed into the steel barrier and landed on to interstate 270. >> i have a child myself. >> traffic came to a screeching halt. before ems a ride, he and his partner pulled four children from the wreckage. >> i had myself in the window. they handed me the children appear. >> in a matter of minutes,

police shot down ramps anad first -- and frustrated commuters inched their way home tonight. >> i had to cut around, but it still took me an hour and 45 minutes. >> practically every road on round was gridlock. several cars suffer the consequences. >> we do not have any overflow roads. you hit residential neighborhoods. we do not have the capacity. >> after sitting in traffic for two hours, this man had to care for his overheated car. it is still running tonight, but democracy boulevard looks much better. it took several hours. on top of getting four children, of the bus, jorge and his partner were able to rescue a little girl who was thrown about

40 feet from the bus. now, today's crash has renewed aaa midlantic push for safer barriers on area roads. they cite today's crash and a number of others over the past several years. among them, was an accident when a tanker truck plunged off of i- 95 and exploded into flames. and this crash in august, 2008, when a tractor trailer went into the chesapeake bay. they cited a federal report saying that crashes running off the road is a factor in over 1/3 of the nation's traffic fatalities. we are on storm watch as a major storm gets ready to dump a boatload of rain and bring a wicked wins to our region. it caused some serious flooding in florida. parts of miami could receive up

to 8 inches of rain. that system is heading our way. bob ryan is here with a first look at the forecast. >> this rain does not have anything to do with nicole which only lasted for four hours. it dissipated. >> but the tropical train all along the east coast continues. there you can see some of the rain that is coming our way. some moderate rain in the frederick area. a flood watch that includes not only our area but a wide area of the east. there are already flood warnings of for parts of the carolinas, which earlier in the week had 5 inches of rain. this has nothing to do with that trouble storm which was way down in cuba, not anything part of this but it is an overall pattern. as we go through the morning hours especially, there will be local, heavy rains causing flooding and delays. i will tell you when this will

move out. now, at this minute, people that live in low-lying areas are preparing for the worst tomorrow. jay korff is live. >> it is really coming down at tonight in old town alexandria. residents can grab some sandbags. with this rain, they could come in handy. >> 3500-4000 sand bags. >> at the end of the day, it is only 40 pounds of sand in the bag. >> just being cautious. >> they hope that several of these will keep the water at bay. >> the worst time -- to ward it off. >> this is one of many d.c. residents to 2, 5 sandbags and.

>> i would love to have eight or 10. >> i've been hearing a big storm coming. that is why i am down here getting my sand bags because last time i did not get them. >> in old town, a place prone to flooding, this manager took advantage of a flatbed stack piled high for residents and merchants. >> we need to be prepared. we have been at the bottom of king street for years. >> they up at several sandbags could stop the possibility of several inches of rain. you would think with all this rain coming down, as you can see on our live truck, that more people would grab some sandbags . just a handful of people. the city of alexandria has more on standby if necessary.

three months pregnant, and her boyfriend were found dead in their upper marlboro home. family members would find out later that she had been shot and her boyfriend fatally stabbed in what appeared to be a break-in. >> it was an attack with a knife, a shooting with a gun. it is a pretty bizarre scenario. >> on wednesday, a jury convicted 29 year-old barnes, partly on the strength of writings on this voodoo candle, in which you wish to his victims to die. >> it tells you how they were going to do it. >> they included barnes co- defendant. a motive? an insurance policy, the estranged wife is the beneficiary. >> two innocent people dying for insurance money?

i mean, that you are not even promised to get. >> now, at this time, no one else faces charges in the case. the co-defendant pleaded guilty in april to two counts of murder. he faces two back-to-back life sentences. barnes faces life in prison without parole. he will be sentenced in december. police in fairfax county held a community meeting in warned people about a serial burglar. a burglar has struck more than 80 times. eight of them were in the open area last night. police believe the burglar could be even more dangerous, because among the stolen items are two bonds. they are warning residents to lock their homes and car doors. >> a lot of people are trying to protect their homes from the rain. it will be primarily early morning into the afternoon. we have had a drought.

a lot of times, we see these heavy rains and floods following a drought. outside tonight, folks are saying, we have only had a little bit. but, boy, it will be a difference tomorrow morning. i think there will be localized standing water. our temperature outside right now, in east-northeasterly wind. there will be strong winds. you folks especially in spots like annapolis, hour rainfall since april about 5 inches below average. it is possible there could be some spots getting four-5 inches oflook at outside right now. our temperature, 66. in the south, temperatures are in the 70's. the fuel for the rain is the moisture, the humidity, and you could feel that. here we are heading towards october. r dewpoint is 61. the contrast -- that is where the energy source is in the

atmosphere. there you can see it briefly -- was nicole. we have a wave in the atmosphere coming our way. not a tropical storm, but certainly tropical moisture. on the doppler, you can see some still very, very heavy rain to our south. there we are in washington. you folks in fredericksburg, you have an idea of the moderate range. tomorrow morning, because the ground has been so dry, it cannot absorb the rain that quickly, so there will be some areas of standing water. wilmington, north carolina, tapped into our sights. they have had 5 inches of rain. so far for the month, 17 inches of rain. right around us, only .10 of an inch in alexander appeared

overnight tonight and during the day tomorrow is likely that some areas will see upwards of two-5 inches of rain. probably a little more concentrated into the evening. we will see it begin to move out 7:00 or 8:00. be prepared for localized flash flooding tomorrow morning. we are under water. tune in the early tomorrow morning. there could be warnings coming out. the rain will taper off into the evening rush hour. but a nasty day throughout the area for travel because of those of low-standing areas and those underpasses that will slow everybody down. after all of this moves by, we will see leftover clouds on friday. but then high pressure comes in and cooler, autumnal -- i l ike that word -- on some all-weather on saturday and sunday. watch out for the heavy rain chevy chase bank is becoming capital one bank.
